EYe & Cataract Clinic

During the month of October in the year 2011, a medical clinic was started for pregnant mothers and children in a rural village know as Nithulemada, situated in Theldiniya in the Kandy District. The instigation to starting this program was due to the Grade 10 Personal Project where my focus was on the Area of Interaction of  ‘Community and Service,’ with the main concept being ‘health and medicine.’

This clinic was handed over to the Ministry of Health in the Central Province with the intention of continuing to operate to the benefit of the pregnant mothers and children for their material checkups; and to function as a health center under the Ministry of Health.

Over the last twelve months since the clinic commenced, medical sessions have been conducted for the pregnant mothers of the Nithulemada village, supervised by the assistance of medical staff from the Ministry of Health. At present, approximately 180 pregnant mothers visit the clinic every week.

Further in the month of October, an eye clinic was held for the villagers, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kandy Heritage where 190 patients were screened by an eye surgeon and his staff attached to the Kandy Teaching Hospital. 20 cataract patients were identified, whose eye operations will be conducted within the month of Nov/Dec 2012; and over 160 spectacles were arranged to be given to the needy patients, which will be ready to be handed personally to them within the month of November 2012.

The main purpose of establishing this clinic is to assist the needy/poverty-stricken villagers to get the adequate medical assistance they require; and also to conduct voluntary service such as eye camps, diabetic camps, etc. offered by the Rotary/Lions/Kiwanis Charity Clubs of Sri Lanka. This clinic is presently equipped with the required, essential medical equipment necessary by a medical officer, in order to conduct any kind of investigations. Surrounding the clinic is an equipped playground with the desired appliances and equipments for the young children to play with when accompanying their mothers to the clinic.
